No Child Left Behind Act

  • The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act was enacted in 2001. It called for all students, including students with disabilities, to be proficient in math and reading by the year 2014.
  • IDEA was reauthorized and aligned to the NCLB act in 2004. It called for more accountability at the state and local levels; more data showing outcomes was required.
Another notable change involved school districts needing to provide adequate instruction and intervention for students to help wean them out of special education.
